Waikato patients now have access to advanced robotic surgery at Braemar Hospital—the only facility in the greater Waikato region offering the da Vinci surgical system.

In November alone, 13 patients underwent robotic procedures at the Hamilton-based hospital, marking a significant milestone since the first case in October 2025.

Five specialists across gynaecology, urology and general surgery are now well on the way to being fully credentialed to perform robotic procedures, with two more in training. Braemar plans to expand to four theatre days per week as it enters its centenary year in 2026.

“We’re seeing Waikato patients gain access to world-class, minimally invasive surgical options in their own region. It is exciting to see this and hear the positive feedback,” says Pru Sheahan, General Manager Clinical Services.

“Our specialists have embraced this technology, and the momentum is building rapidly.”

The da Vinci system offers patients greater surgical precision, smaller incisions, faster recovery times and reduced scarring compared to traditional surgery.

Patients interested in robotic surgery should discuss options with their GP, specialist and insurer. Many health insurance providers cover robotic procedures.

Braemar Hospital Chief Executive Fiona Michel says the investment in the robot reflects the hospital’s commitment to surgical innovation. “Our purpose is to Make Lives Better. This technology gives our patients more choices and serves the evolving needs of our Waikato community.”
