With over 13 years of perioperative experience spanning three countries, Senior Registered Nurse Sonia George is a part of Braemar Hospital’s exciting leap into the future of surgical care.
When someone asks Sonia George what she does for work at a dinner party, her response is guaranteed to spark curiosity: “I’m a theatre nurse and yep, I work with a robot now! It’s pretty amazing being part of high-tech surgeries and helping the team make it all happen smoothly.”
This infectious enthusiasm perfectly captures why Sonia was the natural choice to be part of Braemar Hospital’s new Robotic Surgery Team as Clinical Nurse Lead—a role that represents both a transformative moment for the hospital and the culmination of years of dedication in perioperative care.
A Global Journey to New Zealand
Sonia’s path to this groundbreaking position began in India, where she started her nursing career before working in Saudi Arabia and eventually settling in New Zealand over nine years ago. This international experience has shaped her approach to leadership, instilling cultural sensitivity, adaptability, and an open-minded perspective that serves her well in today’s diverse healthcare environment.
“Working in different countries has taught me to be culturally sensitive, adaptable, and open-minded. It has shaped how I lead: with empathy and collaboration,” Sonia explains.
At Braemar Hospital for the past four years, Sonia has built expertise across urology, gynaecology, general, dental, and plastic surgeries. Her commitment to excellence extends beyond patient care—she’s served as an Infection Prevention and Control Representative, mentored staff, and contributed to quality improvement initiatives.
Stepping Into the Future
As Clinical Nurse Lead for Robotic Services, Sonia’s role encompasses supporting the surgical team, coordinating robotic theatre workflow, staff education, and ensuring all equipment is ready for action. She works closely with surgeons, representatives, CSSD, and the wider theatre team to deliver seamless patient care.
“What excites me most about this role is the opportunity to be part of a transformative moment in healthcare,” Sonia reflects. “This role reflects not just a step forward in my career, but the result of many years of hard work, learning, and growth in the perioperative space.”
Her immediate priorities are clear: building a confident, well-prepared team through structured training sessions, developing safe and efficient workflows, and creating a supportive environment where staff feel empowered to embrace this exciting technology.
Leadership with Heart
For Sonia, leadership isn’t about authority—it’s about presence, approachability, and support. “I know what it’s like to learn something new and feel overwhelmed, so I want to make sure no one feels alone in this journey,” she says.
Her approach emphasises hands-on training, simulation practice, and practical e-learning options that meet team members where they are. She’s passionate about building a culture of safety and respect, where open communication and feedback are encouraged, all while upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi to ensure culturally safe, equitable care.
“At the end of the day, it’s not just about technology—it’s about people. I want to lead in a way that brings our team together, supports growth, and helps us deliver robotic surgery with both excellence and heart.”
Beyond the Operating Theatre
Outside of work, Sonia treasures spending time with her family, especially her children. Whether they’re cooking together, dancing to music, or travelling, these moments keep her grounded and fuel the energy she brings to her hospital role.
She’s also channeled her passion for connection into a YouTube channel where she shares real-life stories, health tips, motivational talks, cooking ideas, and beauty content—reflecting her belief that small moments can lead to big impact.
A Bright Future Ahead
Sonia’s appointment represents Braemar Hospital’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and professional development. The introduction of robotic surgery exemplifies how the hospital continues investing in the future of healthcare, providing patients with world-class surgical options.
“Braemar is a special place committed to excellence. I feel supported here and proud to be part of a team that continuously moves forward,” Sonia adds.
