Children

Both our hospitals welcome children.

We have some special facilities to make our younger patients feel welcome. We actively encourage a parent or caregiver to stay with young children while they are in hospital. We know from experience that this makes their recovery quicker and easier.

Please make sure that your child's favourite toy or blanket comes to hospital as well. A buggy is sometimes useful for younger children to be able to comfortably move out of their rooms, as they are able.

It may be possible to accompany your child to theatre and stay with them up until they are asleep when we will need to ask you to leave. Please discuss this option with your anaesthetist.

We will contact you as soon as they are awake in Recovery so you can be with them again as they wake up. We find that both parents and children benefit from this process. If you would like the support of someone to sit with you while your child is in theatre, please ask and we will arrange for this to happen.

At Braemar Hospital we have some toys and books available to suit most ages and have a limited selection of DVD’s for viewing.  Ask your nurse to arrange for these to be available.

A children's menu is available to tempt smaller appetites, and we never run out of ice cream and jelly.

Both of our hospitals have a dedicated playroom to occupy the younger children prior to surgery. A TV, a selection of DVD’s and a range of toys are available in the playroom.

If there is something else that you feel would make your child's stay more enjoyable, please don't hesitate to ask and we will do our best to provide it.
